Cranes, it is said in Bhutan, prefer sacred places. The Phobjikha Valley, deep inside Bhutan, is such a sacred place. From mid-October, all the inhabitants here wait for the arrival of the migratory birds. The animals fly from Tibet to the protected valley to spend the winter. Since the ground hardly ever freezes over here, the cranes can find enough food even in the winter months. For people, the arrival of the cranes is an important omen.
