⚠️3 Expressions from Bologna you NEED to know🇮🇹🧡
People from Bologna, aka Bolognesi, use words from their dialect and believe they are Italian. Even if they have a completely different meaning in the national language!
Here are the most common ones:
Dado: this means “a die” in Italian, but Bolognesi use it as “mate, dude”.
Rusco: Bolognesi use this word to mean “garbage” or “trash” as acronym for i Rifiuti Urbani Solidi Comunali (Solid Urban Waste) aka R.U.S.CO, but in standard Italian, ‘rusco’ can refer to thorny plants, such as bramble, butcher’s broom, or asparagus!
Dare il tiro: this phrase translates into “give the shot”, which is nonsensical in Italian. However, in Bologna, it means “to open the door”. It comes from the system of ropes and chains that were once used to open the door for guests that rang the bell.
