Sensory Input: Tactile
Many children need additional sensory input to help them stay calm or return to calm after being upset. Some children resist extra input because it's upsetting to them to be sticky or messy. Providing tactile input can be easy and fun for both of these types of learners; try shaving cream! The student in this video deals with high anxiety and typically requests shaving cream or other sensory inputs to help her stay calm when she's getting out of control. Shaving cream also can have a powerful olfactory (smell) effect, so try different brands until you find one that works for you and your particular students/children.
Cleaning up shaving cream from a flat surface is easy! Take a small paper cup and swirl it around on the table, drinking edge down against the table. The edges of the cup will pick up the shaving cream. Notice that in the video, we have more students wanting to CLEAN UP the shaving cream than we had students who wanted to play in it!
