How it works - St Albans Signal Box

From the volunteers at St Albans Signal Box here is a description of what the signal box levers, instruments and indicators do. A demonstration of how they were used in sequence to control train movements along the lines passing through St Albans.

A computer simulation of signal boxes at Harpenden and Radlett and of a train scheduled to pass between them via St Albans, is used to demonstrate how the signal boxes communicate, and how the levers and instruments control and display the movement of the train. Bells and indicators are used communicate between signal boxes. Levers are used to control the track that the train will use and the signals that indicate when the driver may proceed, or must slow down or stop. The instruments inform the signaller of the current state of the train, track and signals.
