Earth as Building Material

Highlights from the International Course on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture 2018 in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Participants performed basic laboratory and field test to characterize and classify a given earth sample. This led to work with density versus moisture content (the Carazas Test), which determines for each type of raw earth the conditions in which it must be used.

The International Course on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture is a partnership of the Getty Conservation Institute and the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi.
