Patchett & Tarses on Letterman, September 30, 1982, & Stand-Ups, 1967

Tom Patchett and Jay Tarses's only appearance on Dave. The three had first worked together four years earlier on the short-lived show "Mary." They were together again months before Late Night premiered when Dave cameo'd in a Merril-Markoe-penned episode of "Open All Night," another Patchett & Tarses creation. (Merrill later wrote an episode of Tom and Jay's "Buffalo Bill" months after this Late Night appearance.)

Included is a skit featuring Larry Bud's "son" Troy, here portraying Dave's son. And an installment of Nightcap Theater.

This show was taped ten days earlier on September 20, which explains Jay's birthday greeting to his son Matt.

Then two clips from Tom and Jay's early stand-up career, before they abandoned it and moved to L.A. to become two of the most successful television writers in the industry:

1. February 7, 1967: "The Merv Griffen Show*
2. July 22, 1967: "Away We Go" with host George Carlin**

* I recorded this at the time on my reel-to-reel tape recorder at home. Unfortunately, there's no video, so to compensate. I put together a series of still images consisting of (1) screen captures of the following stand-up footage; (2) photographs found online; and (3) most of their television onscreen credits until they decided to pursue their careers separately. The photos are positioned in chronological sequence to the television credits.

** I also recorded this at the time on my reel-to-reel, but it turned out that the entire show had already been uploaded. This is extracted from the YouTube channel of thecrippledrummer, the link here:

For Jay's daughter Jamie.
