Pattern Matching a Seam - Professional Tips and Tutorial for all Levels
When pattern matching you usually match the patterns along either selvage. In this case, I had a drop pattern, so matched the selvage side of the fabric to the pattern in the center of the fabric. This sometimes doesn't work as well on longer projects, although for shorter ones it is usually fine. The real key is to hold the fabric at a right angle or close to so you can see how the pattern is matching up and pinch it into positions and hold both fabrics taught. If you put the pattern directly on top of the other, then fold the fabric out and sew, the seam will not be in the right place is will always be slightly off.
Usually, the pattern overlaps about 1"/2.5cm which means on the side I am sewing on, I will fold back 1/4"/.75cm in from the selvaged edge and press it firmly into place.
On fabrics that the pattern match is on the selvage/pattern join, I prefer to look further into the fabric design and match the patterns there as it is much easier and gives a nicer look.
Remember to work your pattern in from bottom to top of the fabric when working on curtains as people tend to look from midway down so any imperfections will be more obvious at the bottom of the curtains than at the top where the seams might be well hidden from being gathered together.
I have been in the upholstery and interior decorating business for 30 years as well as teaching these subjects both privately and in colleges. I have drawn on my years of teaching to put this video together and hope to have answered all your questions.
Please feel free to ask questions and I shall see if I can answer them for you.
