Exploring airport traffic around the world, day 1: Chicago O'Hare #aviation #airplane #airports
Here’s day 1 of exploring airport traffic around the world: today, we’re at Chicago O’Hare.
O’Hare is the 8th busiest airport in the world by passenger count, handling 80 million passengers last year, and you can just see that by the constant traffic lining up on final approach. It kind of looks like an air highway.
O'Hare has 6 of its 8 total runways going from east to west, and 3 of them are mainly used for landing as you can see here – those being 27R, 27C, and 28C.
Meanwhile 3 other runways – being 27L, 28R, and 22L – are used almost exclusively for takeoff.
Despite having 3 runways for takeoff, the departure queues can get really backed up at O’Hare. Just take a look at these lines here.
That’s partly why O’Hare is known for having the longest taxi times in all of the US, with an average of 22 minutes. I would not recommend booking any tight connections here.
But, the long taxi times are justified, as there is so much traffic coming in and out of this airport. A plane takes off or lands every 10 seconds here at O'Hare.
That was today’s airport. Drop a comment for where I should go next. Follow for day 2!
