What is a compressor stall? #aviation #engineering #compressor #stall #airplane #aircraftengine
This is a compressor stall, and it can result in engine damage and engine failure. But how and why does this happen?
I’m Ethan, an incoming Aerospace engineer at the University of Illinois.
So here’s a commercial aircraft engine, and this area behind the large turbine at the front is called the compressor.
The compressor consists of these rows of fans, with small blades. Each blade is basically like a little wing that pushes the air backward.
Just like the real wings on a plane, these little blade wings can also stall, which happens when the airflow over these wings get disrupted and break apart.
Because of this, there’s a rapid buildup of pressure in some areas, and a release in others. This sudden change in air movement creates strong pressure waves.
Thus, the airflow can even reverse direction, going out the front of the engine. This rapid pulsing and reversal of airflow generates a series of loud bangs.
However, don’t worry. All planes are certified to fly on one engine, and by reducing power on the affected engine, the airflow can stabilize again and the affected engine can recover.
Have you ever experienced a compressor stall? Let me know in the comments.
