Introducing Children to Watercolor

For a change of pace, I thought it might be fun to show a sweet little girl painting for the first time. She's my niece (and frequent model) Belle, and she's two. I think when you introduce a child to a new activity like this, you really ought to make it fun and interesting for them rather than a high-pressure situation.

Abstract watercolors are definitely an easy thing to do, and there's no right or wrong way to paint them. They're more fun if you wet the paper down first--children will see the magic that happens with wet-into-wet. Kids tend to put lots of paint on their brushes, and a wet surface helps that spread out and diffuse.

Belle/Nook and I are using my (really nice) paints, paper, and brushes, but this will work with student- or child-grade supplies too, of course.

If you're buying watercolor supplies for a first-time artist, I recommend Prang washable watercolors in a set of 8. I also like nylon brushes, which you can get just about anywhere in sets with multiple sizes, and I found some relatively inexpensive, 15-sheet pads of student-grade watercolor paper from Bienfang on Amazon. They're what I bought Nook for her birthday, which is coming up next month.

Fashion note: good god that dress (and the slumpy posture Nook's tiny table made me take on) is unflattering! It was hot and humid that day, and we were going to be outside for the AWESOME total eclipse, so I just put on the least-hot dress I had. I'm never buying anything with an empire waist again!
