The Stray Dog That Triggered an International Crisis

In 1925, a border incident between Greece and Bulgaria escalated into a real military conflict—reportedly after a Greek soldier chased his dog across the frontier near Petrich.

Shots were fired. Troops crossed borders. Artillery was used. Civilians fled nearby towns.

The conflict became known as the Incident at Petrich, though many people remember it by its unofficial nickname: “The War of the Stray Dog.”

It sounds absurd today, but Europe at the time was tense, unstable, and still scarred from World War I. Sometimes history does not explode because of one big reason. Sometimes it explodes because everything was already waiting to ignite.
