The History Behind the British Museum Gets Dark

The British Museum is often presented as a neutral institution of knowledge and preservation.

But its origins are deeply tied to empire.

The museum’s founding collection came largely from Hans Sloane — physician, collector, and president of the Royal Society — whose wealth and collecting were connected to colonial systems in Jamaica shaped by plantation slavery and imperial extraction.

Long before the polished glass displays, there were plantations, forced labor, appropriated knowledge, and objects removed from colonial networks.

The museum came later.
The empire came first.
