When a Promise of Safety Turned Into a Trap

A white flag is supposed to mean safety.
At the Mountain Meadows Massacre, it became part of a deadly betrayal.

In 1857, the Baker-Fancher wagon train was crossing Utah Territory during a period of fear, rumor, and rising tension connected to the Utah War. After days of siege and violence, survivors were reportedly lured out under a promise of protection—then killed. Only 17 young children survived.

The tragedy remains one of the darkest chapters in American frontier history, and a reminder of how quickly fear and suspicion can turn into catastrophe.
