Global National: June 5, 2022 | Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations end with colourful pageant
On this episode of Global National: It was a pageant fit for a queen. From essential workers to celebrities, some 10,000 people made their way to Buckingham Palace on Sunday to pay tribute Queen Elizabeth II. The festivities, honouring the monarch’s seven decades of service, culminated with a surprise appearance by the Queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Redmond Shannon reports.
The city of London, Ont., marked a tragic anniversary on Sunday. It was one year ago that four members of a Muslim family were killed when they were hit by a truck in what police and prosecutors describe as a hate-motivated crime. Only the youngest child survived. Abigail Bimman looks at how the community is honouring their memory.
There is now a clear picture of how many crises the international community is ignoring. The Norwegian Refugee Council, a humanitarian organization, has released its annual “Top 10” list of the most neglected crises around the world and for the first time all 10 are in Africa. Mike Armstrong is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country sitting at the top of that grim ranking.
There is no denying that Queen Elizabeth has been an enduring presence in the world. Dawna Friesen reflects on her seven decades on the throne.
