Taiwan lawmakers brawl in parliament over chamber reforms dispute
Taiwan lawmakers turned violent with one another in Taipei’s parliament on Friday during a dispute over chamber reforms.
Many could be seen leaping over tables to steal documents, crowding the house speaker’s seat, and even pulling one another to the ground. The initial scuffles didn’t last too long, but they flared up again later.
The violence comes a day before president-elect and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman Lai Ching-te is set to take office — without a legislative majority. Though the primary opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has more seats than the DPP, it does not have enough to form a majority, and was left to join forces with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) to push through its own proposals.
The DPP, however, has accused the opposition parties of an “unconstitutional abuse of power,” as they allegedly try to skip mandatory consultation processes in order to push forward their own chamber proposals.
This comes as the KMT and TPP are working to give parliament stronger scrutiny powers over the federal government — including a divisive proposal to criminalize officials deemed to have made false statements in parliament.
