Camp Lejeune Parkinson's Disease Lawsuits

From 1953 to 1987, the water supply at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina was contaminated with extremely high levels of toxic chemicals. In response to this contamination, the federal government has directed several public health agencies to study and evaluate the impact of this contamination on the long-term health of Camp Lejeune residents and employees. These studies have recently concluded that Parkinson’s disease is one of the long-term health conditions that may have been caused by exposure to the chemicals in the drinking water at Camp Lejeune.

Parkinson's disease is a common adult neurodegenerative disorder that prominently affects motor function, resulting in several symptoms, including bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, and resting tremor. It is an awful disease.

Nonmotor manifestations include problems with cognition, mood, and behavior that is difficult both for victims and their families. Parkinson's disease affects widespread brain regions, but its core symptoms arise from the loss of dopaminergic neurons in both the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area of the brain.

There is little question that Camp Lejeune's toxic water caused many soldiers and their family members to later suffer from Parkinson's disease.

TWO STUDIES

Two studies underscore the relationship between Parkinson's and contaminated water, particularly TCE.

The first study was a large-scale epidemiological study that aimed to investigate the association between exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) and Parkinson's disease. TCE is a common industrial solvent linked to various health problems, including Parkinson's disease. The researchers used a case-control design, meaning they compared a group of people with Parkinson's disease to those without the disease and looked for differences in TCE exposure between the two groups. They found that people with Parkinson's disease were more likely to have been exposed to TCE than those without it, even after controlling for other factors that could influence the results.

This study, published in the Annals of Neurology in 2011, found that exposure to TCE was associated with a six-fold increased risk of Parkinson's disease. Six-fold. Six-fold does not leave much doubt if the study is sound.

The second study was an animal study, but it attacked the core issue - the biological mechanisms underlying the association between TCE exposure and Parkinson's disease. The researchers exposed rats to TCE and then measured brain function and structure changes. They found that TCE exposure caused damage to dopamine neurons. This is THE SAME type of neurons damaged in Parkinson's disease. This strongly suggests that TEC causes Parkinson's disease by damaging dopamine neurons in the brain - just like scientists expected.
