I was thinking about how my physics students often say their previous science teachers lied to them...

• In junior school, they learn that atoms are the smallest building blocks of life.
• In the first few years of senior school, they learn that we can break an atom into constituents, protons, neutrons, and electrons.
• In sixth form, they learn about quarks.

Teachers don't deliberately "lie" about physics. We scaffold and simplify our teaching so that students can learn at the right level.
