Noise cancelling headphones make noise - Physics of Active Noise Cancellation

Superposition of waves is when two or more waves meet at a point. The resulting wave displacement is the sum of the individual wave displacements at that point.

This idea is related to constructive and destructive interference. Constructive interference occurs when the wave displacements are in phase, meaning their peaks and troughs align, resulting in a wave of greater amplitude.

In contrast, destructive interference happens when the wave displacements are out of phase, meaning the peak of one wave aligns with the trough of another, effectively cancelling each other out and resulting in a wave of reduced or zero amplitude.
