Gov. Stein to hear from teachers on new cellphone in schools law

Governor Josh Stein is scheduled to visit East Mecklenburg High School on Tuesday, Jan. 13 to hear directly from teachers about North Carolina’s new effort to reduce distractions and increase focus in the classroom.

The visit comes just weeks after school districts across the state met a Jan. 1 deadline to comply with a new law restricting cell phone and social media use during the school day.

Stein signed the measure into law last summer after his Task Force on Student Safety and Well-Being identified classroom distractions as a top concern.

The law passed with near-unanimous support in the state legislature and requires districts statewide to limit student access to cell phones and social media during instructional time.
