Weather Impact Alert | Ice storm hits Carolinas

Another wave of freezing rain could lead to widespread power outages and dangerous road conditions across the Carolinas on Sunday, as a major winter storm brought snow and ice to the region this weekend.

Weather Impact meteorologist Chris Mulcahy said Charlotte will see a break in the precipitation early Sunday afternoon, but things are expected to change around 3 p.m. That's when another line of freezing rain is expected to push over the metro. The extremely cold temperatures led to prime conditions for freezing rain, according to Mulcahy.

"We've been way too cold recently. It's been so dry, with temperatures in the teens and 20s to around the freezing point," Mulcahy said. "This is not the fun part. This is what's going to cause some power outages."

An Ice Storm Warning is in effect for the entire Charlotte area through Monday, Jan. 26. The Ice Storm Warning is in effect for the following counties: Alexander, Anson, Ashe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Chester, Chesterfield, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Rowan, Stanly, Union, Watauga and York. #Weatjer #News #Charlotte
