AC Joint Sprain Rehabilitation - Stretches, Exercises and Massage For Faster Recovery
In todays video we go through the AC Joint, we look at the best exercises and mobilizations to strengthen the AC Joint post injury and look at the anatomy of the joint itself.
What is the AC Joint?
The AC (acromioclavicular) joint is where the shoulder blade (scapula) meets the collarbone (clavicle). The highest point of the shoulder blade is called the acromion. Strong tissues called ligaments connect the acromion to the collarbone, forming the AC joint. An AC joint sprain occurs when an injury damages the ligaments in the AC joint.
What causes AC joint sprain?
Often an accident or injury forces a sprain. This may include:
Falling onto your shoulder
Falling onto an outstretched hand
Getting a direct blow to your shoulder
Sporting Injuries
Overuse of the joint
What are the Symptoms of an AC joint sprain?
Symptoms can vary depending on how serious the injury is. They can include: Shoulder pain, Shoulder that feels sore when touched, Swelling, Bruising, Change in the shoulder’s shape, Bulge above the shoulder, Shoulder that appears to droop, Collarbone that moves upward and a Limited movement in the shoulder.
Depending on the severity of the ligament damage, acromioclavicular sprains usually are classified into three grades:
Grade I — The acromioclavicular ligament is partially torn but its companion ligament, the coracoclavicular, is uninjured, so the acromioclavicular joint remains tightly joined.
Grade II — The acromioclavicular ligament is completely torn and the coracoclavicular ligament is partially torn. In this case, the collarbone typically angles slightly out of place.
Grade III — Both the acromioclavicular ligament and the coracoclavicular ligament are completely torn, and the collarbone separation is obvious.
Some doctors classify the most severe acromioclavicular injuries into even higher grades or types, from IV to VI. With each higher grade, the collarbone is more displaced away from its normal position and the shoulder is more severely deformed.
