Jack Ruby Trial Lawyer Melvin Belli Reacts to Guilty Verdict
On March 14, 1964 a jury of 12 in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murder by malice of alleged presidential assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby famously shot Oswald on live television in the Dallas Police Headquarters basement as Oswald was being transferred out. The defense's question of Ruby's sanity was rejected, and he would be sentenced to death barring an appeal that was expected to be denied. Ruby's defense attorney, Melvin Belli, known for his colorful demeanor, gave this vivid reaction to the press. Belli claimed Dallas jurors made some 30 errors in this case, the outcome of which was deliberated for only 19 minutes. Credit: KRLD-TV/KTVT/The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.
