'We are not quite at the point' of China being able to take over Taiwan: Blaxland

ANU Professor John Blaxland says China is not ready for a war over Taiwan but they will be within the next decade but this readiness was sped up by the pandemic.

“China is not yet ready, it’s been building its forces and it’s probably going to be ready in the next decade,” he told Sky News host Catherine McGregor.

Professor Molan said the “industrial pace” at which China was building its army it is accelerating the pace China will be able to “call the shot over the Taiwan Strait”.

Professor Molan also said he was not sure whether the Biden administration could be able to change China’s power dynamics but worries any action Biden may take may “come at the expense of us in Australia”.

“My sense is he is now in the position of trying to craft a position that will coax some concessions out of China.”
