The Trifid Cipher Explained

#cryptology, #cryptography, #cryptanalysis

The trifid cipher was invented by Félix-Marie Delastelle and published in 1902. It combines substitution (3 Polybius squares), transposition, and fractionation. In this video, we first explain how the cipher works, its keyspace size, and unicity distance. Then, we show how to use the trifid cipher component of CrypTool 2 to encrypt and decrypt texts.

A small article on my blog about the cipher: https://www.kopaldev.de/2022/12/20/bifid-and-trifid-cipher/

If you are interested in learning the fundaments of cryptology, let me invite you to have a look at our video series about the basics of cryptology, also for beginners: https://youtu.be/jbumW7Ym03o

You can download the latest version of CrypTool 2 from here: https://www.cryptool.org/en/ct2/downloads
