Federal government needs to ‘interfere’ with Victoria’s China relationship: Hanson

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson says the federal government should interfere in Victoria’s Belt and Road deal with communist China on “a security basis”.

Victoria has confirmed it will push ahead with its plan to sign up to China’s US$1.4 trillion infrastructure program.

The Belt and Road Initiative is designed to link China with Asia, Europe and Africa via a massive infrastructure investment that will see the widespread construction of railways, motorways and ports.

China claims the deal will be mutually beneficial, but Beijing maintains the right to seize the asset it has built if the country cannot pay for it.

This happened in Sri Lanka, where the communist party repossessed a port after the government was unable to repay the loans it used to build it.

Ms Hanson says the Victorian government’s dealings with the Communist Party of China haven’t been above board while there is “no accountability” for the negotiations Premier Daniel Andrews is making.

She told Sky News host Peter Gleeson this deal will be “so detrimental to Victoria” because its already in debt for $50 billion and the Chinese loans reportedly amount to another $24.5 billion.
