What Is A Bicone Bead
Hi there. In this video I'm going to explain to you just what bicone beads are. I'll show you some examples and also give you an alternate name. So all of these beads here that I have in front of me are bicone beads. The word comes in two parts, bi which means two, and cone for a cone shape if you remember that from geometry class. And when you put two of them together with the wide ends together that is the shape you get for this bead called a bicone.
It's really just talking about the shape of the bead. The material doesn't matter. I have a whole bunch of Swarovski crystal bicones here glass bicones. This is a lampwork glass bicone. You can see that in the crystal ones the edge where the two come together is very crisp and sharp. But in the lampwork one it's a bit more rounded. There are also metal spacer beads in various sizes that are bicones. On this one the edge is actually beaded. These are pressed glass bicones. And so again the edge isn't quite as sharp.
And you can find bicone beads in two different styles. These are your traditional center drilled. I slid these on to a head pin so you can see that they're drilled symmetrically from point to point. And so when you put them on a head pin you get this pretty diamond profile. But also they can be drilled across the tip of the bead so that when I put them on a head pin here you can see they hang down. Sometimes these are called drops. In fact, here's an example of where I used the drops just as part of a tassel by adding jump rings through that hole across the tip. And then they dangle and hang down in a different way.
Bicone beads are also sometimes referred to as hogan beads hogan being a word for an Indian dwelling. And if you think of the wigwam or teepee it's this cone shape. Sometimes it's a bit more domed and less pointed. You put two of those together and you get this shape. You'll often see it referred to that way in Southwestern American style jewelry.
I hope you found this helpful. Now you know what the term bicone means. Happy creating
