DAY 8 🕶🎶

The title says it all: “The Best Things In Life Are Free.”

We treat everything we do musically as a celebration of life. Few tracks capture this feeling of euphoria quite like “The Best Things In Life Are Free” which was created for the Damon Kwayans film “Mo Money”. And with amazing performances from Janet Jackson and the late great Luther Vandross, you can’t help but want to dance. 💃🏽🕺🏿

The story goes: We had written a song for Luther and sent it to him. We never heard back so we assumed he didn’t like it. About a year later we got a coveted invitation to one of his legendary “movie night” gatherings at his Beverly Hills home. After watching the movie 🎥 (don’t remember what it was) we mentioned we were doing the soundtrack for “Mo Money” and asked if he had ever listened to the song we had sent him. Luther said “yes and I love that song” and started singing it note for note 🤯. Our minds were blown to actually be hearing his heavenly voice singing a song we wrote for him. Then he said “but what I’d really like to do is one those funky uptempo songs you do so well. People don’t think I can sing like that… oh, and I’d like it to be a duet with Janet.” 😳

Obviously that wasn’t the answer we were expecting but we were reminded of something Richard Branson who had just signed Janet to his Virgin Records label told us, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you're not sure you can do it, say yes and then figure out how to get it done.”🤷🏾‍♂️ So we of course said YES!

The details of getting it done would be way too long (like all of our stories) but the results speak for themselves as the record became a worldwide smash and added another Billboard R&B #1 and Hot 100 Top 10’s to all of our collective resumes.

But the “best thing” I remember was Luther’s joy in seeing his musical idea come to life.🙏🏾
