Robotic non-planar 3D printing of a curved pipe

Few things beat standing next to a 3D printer and seeing a new path planning strategy come to life through an actual part.

Yesterday, I had the chance to work together with Woodrow Wiest at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden to 3D print a curved pipe using one of the many non-planar printing strategies implemented into ADAXIS AdaOne software.

The part was printed in glass fibre reinforced PP using a thermoplastic extruder attached to an ABB robot arm. Process planning was done in AdaOne together with ABB RobotStudio 3D printing Powerpack.

The work was done as a part of the SoftDREAM project, funded by EIT Manufacturing.
