Backpacking Waimanu Valley in Hawaii

This was a 2 day overnight backpacking trip to Waimanu Valley on the Big Island. We started at the Waipi'o Valley Overlook and hiked the Muliwai trail. There are two river crossings and some small stream crossings. Once in Waimanu Valley you can see several waterfalls. The closest waterfall, the one we hiked too, is Wai'ilikahi Falls (1080 ft).

Be warned that it can be dangerous to swim under waterfalls like these. Rocks and other debris sometimes fall down through the water and strike swimmers. Flash flooding at river and stream crossings occur often during the rainy season.

ELEVATION GAIN: ~8000 ft (round trip, including to the waterfall)
DISTANCE: ~24 Miles round trip
