THE WHITE SATIN EVENING GOWN by Alvin Schwartz & REAL Poisoned Dresses

From "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," THE WHITE SATIN EVENING GOWN is another Alvin Schwartz nightmare creation. This short story made me afraid of used clothing for years. (I wish I was exaggerating for dramatic effect.)

Since his other haunting short story THE GREEN RIBBON had origins in a Washington Irving retelling of a French legend, I thought that maybe THE WHITE SATIN EVENING GOWN had a similar basis. Not quite. But I will share a story about real poisoned arsenic dresses.

And, surprisingly, the death of Hercules ties into the myth of poisoned clothing. In hindsight, was this a necessary addition? No. Do I like including random information in seemingly disconnected videos? Yes.

I don’t know why I sometimes try to film in a different spot in my house. I never like the way the videos turn out. I definitely thought about reshooting it, but RAN OUT OF TIME. AS PER USUAL.

Note: Since filming, I did confirm a second (and presumably third) dress that tested positive for arsenic that was on display at the Bata Shoe Museum. So I also used those photos in the video. You will find though that there are a lot of articles out there about arsenic dresses that just use photos or drawings of old green dresses found on Google Image Search. Or the images link back to Getty Images with no further information. (I did use a few of these… because pretty. But I want to be clear what was verifiable and what wasn’t.)
