Research reveals dire survival rates of wildlife during Black Summer bushfires
Despite the rescue efforts of volunteers and everyday Australians, new research has revealed the dire survival rates of wildlife during the Black Summer bushfires.
There are calls for improvements to Australia’s disaster response plans to ensure wildlife is factored in.
An estimated 46 million animals were caught in the New South Wales fire zone of the 2019/2020 fires.
Only 0.01 per cent of those animals could be rescued.
Four years on from the fires, it has been revealed half of those marsupials did not survive.
“Only 889 animals were rescued, and, on Kangaroo Island, there were only reports of 618 marsupials being rescued,” University of Sydney Associate Professor Catherine Herber said.
