The battle for Bougainville was difficult as the Americans, and later Allied forces fought their way across the island. But by November 1943 lesson were learned, and continually being learned, and tactics gained in facing the Japanese. This battle, and the subsequent fighting that followed, was a part of Operation Cartwheel.
