The attack started in the predawn hours of December 16, 1944. It was an attack the Americans had not expected the Germans would make, and their intelligence failed to determine the course of what was happening.

The Germans in their efforts only had so much fuel and gasoline for the attack, but they banked everything on it. If they could capture key supply depots in the process their efforts would continue.

Other American units involved in the northern attack that were not mentioned were the 102nd Cavalry Group which was likewise mechanized.
