Asian Lady Beetles may look like harmless ladybugs, but these insects will do more than eat your aphids; they’ll also bite people, produce foul odors, and create yellow stains. The Asian Lady Beetle looks similar to the native ladybug. They’re both small, round beetles with white markings and black spots, with the Asian Lady Beetle growing as large as ¼ of an inch, slightly larger than the average ladybug. While ladybugs are known for their bright red elytra with black spots, Asian Lady Beetles can be orange, yellow, or red with black spots. There are even Asian Lady Beetles that are primarily black with a few large spots. Additionally, the Asian Lady Beetle is further distinguished by the M marking on its pronotum, or the shell behind its head.

Asian Lady Beetles are overwintering pests. We’re normally not bothered by beetles during warmer months, but when conditions outdoors drop and get too harsh, they’ll invade the structures on our property. When inspecting for Asian Lady Beetles, be on the lookout for the yellowish stains they leave behind and the beetles themselves. Start by inspecting the outer perimeter of your structure. Overwintering pests can use features like vents or chimneys to access our homes. After inspecting outdoors, check indoors for pest activity. Overwintering pests will cluster together around heat sources or hide in enclosed cracks and crevices.

To treat Asian Lady Beetles, you’ll need to apply a residual chemical barrier like Reclaim IT. Reclaim IT is a liquid insecticide concentrate that’s labeled to control a variety of pests for up to 90 days. Reclaim IT is limited to spot, crack and crevice spraying indoors, but it leaves no odor and will help repel pests from entering, making it well suited for general indoor applications. If you have a residential misting system or the appropriate equipment to conduct a space spray application, you can also consider Flex 10-10. Flex 10-10 is a broad-use emulsifiable concentrate used to control many insects, including Lady Asian Beetles, mosquitoes, fleas, and cockroaches.

You can stop Asian Lady Beetles from entering your home by keeping up with pesticide treatments and addressing the entry points you found during your inspection. First, close up small entry points outside of your structure with copper mesh and caulk. Repair damaged screens and door seals. Next, trim back vegetation away from your structure, including any overhanging branches from nearby trees. Finally, be sure to keep up with regular pesticide applications and reapply Reclaim IT every 90 days for guaranteed control.
