LMS Princess Coronation 46233 at Preston 05-10-12

In preparation for tomorrow's 'Caledonian' Railtour, several stock movements had been rumbling in and out of Preston as part of the staging for the fluent running of the tour. Today saw former London, Midland & Scottish Railway Princess Coronation Class 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' rumbling into Preston station with her support coach in tow bound for Carnforth Steam Town. This fleet of 38 locomotives were once the main driving force behind the LMS's London to Glasgow services between their introduction in 1937 and their withdrawal by British Railways in 1964 with the introduction of Diesel and Electric types taking over many of their prestige workings. The Locomotives were also famous for their short lived 'Streamlining' cases that were added to the front of the original batch of locomotives in an attempt for faster journey times and also in an attempt to match the LNER's A4 Pacific's as a Public Relations image. However, this did not go according to plan and did not give the locomotives the desired finesse that the LMS so desired. Later versions of the locomotives were built with more conventional Smoke Deflectors.

Today's run was nothing but spectacular, the Duchess clearly showing her beautifully maintained external condition that can be thanked to the Midland Railway -- Butterley, whose devoted work has been attributed upon many a famous engine including BR Standard Class 5 73129, S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 53809, LMS Fowler Class 3F 0-6-0T 47327 and of course, the Duchess herself.

Enjoy!!
