Wet weather means the babies need some shelter
Stormy weather means we decided to bring the babies in.
The challenges of lambing in February which to be honest I think we are going to change next year!
Having said that farmers lambing in March and April can get these same weather challenges.
Last year it was freezing until May meaning the grass didn’t grow. For us that meant making silage late and we have still had to buy some silage in to see us through the winter.
We need the wet weather of course, in fact we probably need snow at times to improve the soil, however with baby lambs they just don’t like it.
This is mainly because they don’t start ruminating until they get to about 1 1/2 to 2 months old so they aren’t creating their own heat relying on mummy to take them to the right hedge for shelter which they never do and lots of warm milk which can be lacking sometimes.
Once past that age they are pretty bomb proof just like their mums.
As I said in the video we were lucky we have got the space it’s not always the case for many farmers though so if you aren’t from farming don’t go giving your neighbour a hard time because you saw The Devonshire Shepherdess bringing in her sheep. 😉
You have to be living it to understand it and this is one of the biggest challenges we face as farmers today.
