Today I’m experiencing Merdeka Day 2020 as a foreigner in Malaysia – Let’s see how Malaysia’s Independence Day (Merdeka 2020) is being celebrated

How is the Merdeka Day 2020 being celebrated in Kuala Terengganu, a state on the east coast of Malaysia? Today is a special day for Malaysia, the Merdeka Day, which is the Malaysian Independence Day. So, there will of course some celebration going on although it is going to be less than usual, because of the ongoing situation in the world. For me as a foreigner in Malaysia it was really interesting to see the celebration for Merdeka Day here in Kuala Terengganu. It is the Independence Day of Malaysia where they celebrate their Independence from the British Empire. The first Independence Day was back in 1957 and since then the Merdeka Day is being celebrated every year on August 31st. Let’s experience Merdeka 2020 as a foreigner in Malaysia, I am excited!

When you travel southeast Asia, I can highly recommend you to join any national holiday celebration you can find while traveling southeast Asia. This is really one of the best ways to get to know a country, its people and the history of the countries in southeast Asia. It was really interesting to learn about Malaysia’s history today at the Merdeka Day here in Kuala Terengganu.
