How forest protection succeeds in Indonesia | KfW

Germany has been supporting forest protection programs for around 25 years – currently with around three billion euros through the KfW Development Bank alone.

Global deforestation is endangering our livelihoods – restoring and preserving forests is therefore an important goal of the international community.

In Indonesia, and especially on Sumatra, the rate of deforestation in the past has been enormous: Between 1985 and 2007 around 12 billion hectares of forest were cleared on Sumatra. This means that almost 50 percent of Sumatra's entire forest area was cleared in just 22 years.

Today, the efforts that the country has undertaken together with international partners such as the KfW are showing results: Deforestation has been falling for years and is now roughly where it was 20 years ago.

Three projects that have made an important contribution to this and continue to fight for the protection of habitats are supported by KfW: the Bukit Tiga Puluh Conservation Program on Sumatra, which focuses on the reintroduction of orangutans; a coffee construction project in Lubuk Piran and the Elephant Conservation Center. The aim of all three projects is to protect the forest and the coexistence of animals and people in Indonesia.

Or in the words of vet Andhani: "We hope that we can save the rainforest by saving the orangutans."
