Exploring an Uninhabited Island | Wildlife Photography & Wild Camping | Nikon Z7 + 300mm f/2.8G VRII

I spent 24 hours alone on a beautiful uninhabited island on the Northwest coast of Scotland, wild camping and photographing the wildlife!

Description: Most of the islands off the Scottish coast are only accessible by boat / kayak etc., but some can be reached at low tide by wading, such as Isle Ristol in the Summer Isles. I’d had a vague plan of camping there for a while now, and this year the timings of tides and my trip to the area worked out, so I waded across with my camping gear and camera equipment to spend 24 hours exploring and looking for wildlife to photograph. The weather started off windy and wet, but soon improved, and I had a great afternoon watching eiders, seals, and red-throated divers.
In the evening I made a small fire on the sand to watch "Caveman TV" and enjoyed a comfortable night in my little tent. Wild camping on beaches in Scotland is awesome, and part of that is waking up to find all sorts of wildlife on the beach to watch while enjoying a morning coffee! When I first opened my tent there was a female eider with her ducklings really close - they were super cute and fun to watch! After breakfast I set out to look for seals and had a great encounter with a common seal hauled out on the rocks - I was able to get quite close by stalking carefully between the boulders and managed to get a good eye-level position to take some photos.

I took the 300mm f/2.8 lens with me and again I used it as a 420mm f/4 with the 1.4x teleconverter for the whole time. I know I said in my lens review that the 200-500mm would be the better choice for these kind of expeditions, and it probably would have been in some respects, but the 300mm is still my new lens so I wanted to use it!

I had a great time on the island and was probably the only person on there for most of the time, apart from some sea kayakers who stopped for lunch as I was leaving. There’s still plenty of the island that I didn't explore this time, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be back next year!

Important: Wild camping is a great way to be out there in nature, but you must remember that you are a guest there, so always camp discretely and leave no trace that you stayed.
