Description: I went up to the Cairngorms National Park to look for ptarmigan, and I decided to camp up high in the snow so that I’d be on the mountain at dawn. While it was very hard getting up there with all of my gear, I’m really glad I did. The views as the sun rose over the ridge were absolutely breathtaking!

Once up in the snow, which was deep and powdery, I quickly found that I couldn't cover nearly enough ground to have any chance of finding any ptarmigan, unless I got spectacularly lucky. I didn't, but the weather was fantastic and the views were amazing. With wildlife photography, there's always a possibility that the subject just wont show up, but in scenery like the western Cairngorms, it really doesn't matter - spending time out on the hill more than made up for not finding the wildlife! Also, I reckon I got some pretty nice landscape images and sequences with the timelapse platform.

NOTE: Climbing a mountain in the night and camping in the snow are not things to be taken lightly! However, if you are comfortable being on the hill alone and have the appropriate kit, waking up with the mountain to yourself is a pretty awesome feeling 😎
