Tropical Depression 'Caloy' a typhoon threat for China this week

New trouble is brewing in the South China Sea this evening with the formation of a tropical depression, named Caloy by the Philippines. This system is expected to start intensifying fairly soon and aim for typhoon strength late this week as it approaches the coast of southern China. With the track still very uncertain at this time, the most widespread concern is very high amounts of rainfall during this storm's life, with over 400mm possible in parts of southern China extending from Hainan all the way east to Fujian, including Hong Kong, Macau, and a small area of northwestern Luzon in the Philippines.

With rapid intensification possible, however, the area where this storm eventually makes landfall may have to deal with winds in excess of 100mph, although like track, intensity forecasts are currently uncertain.
