Brine Pool II - 5058
This video is about the Brine Pool - Alvin dive 5058
Dr. Craig Young, OIMB director, led a research expedition on the R/V Atlantis in the Gulf of Mexico and off the East Coast of the US. The expedition used the Alvin submersible to explore, collect animals from, and deploy equipment at methane seeps. These are areas where methane, and other hydrocarbons such as oil, naturally seep out of the seafloor. Some of the animals that live near methane seeps house symbiotic bacteria within themselves. These bacteria feed off the methane and produce food for the animal in a process called chemosynthesis.
All of the images in this video were taken from the Alvin submersible by students and faculty inside the sub.
