Italy Sicily | Taormina - 4K Virtual Walking Tour around the City #italy

This walking tour of Taormina was filmed on Saturday, March 31st, 2021.

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theatre still used today. Near the theatre, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.
Places on this tour:

01. Church of Saint Anthony - The small Church of St. Antonio Abate is located near Porta Catania. Built-in about 1330 it was completely destroyed by bombing in 1943, after which it was rebuilt using the same remaining rubble. The Church of St. Antonio Abate, the protector of animals, shows a facade dominated by the beautiful portal in white limestone topped by a pointed arch. White limestone is also the lintel and the two doorposts. At the sides of the portal, there are two small windows decorated by a closure consisting of perforated foil. As well as the other two small windows on the north side and two on the south side.

02. porta Catania - Historic arched entrance in the wall that once protected the ancient city of Taormina.

03. DUOMO - THE CATHEDRAL OF TAORMINA - The first construction of the Duomo or Cathedral of Taormina dates back to the thirteenth century on the ruins of a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. Then, It was rebuilt in the fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth century.
The building looks more fortress than a religious institution. This impression is accentuated by the construction made entirely with large stone blocks and finished with battlements along the whole perimeter of the building. The facade is adorned with a large rose window made of Siracusa stone of excellent workmanship. Two other rosettes on sides of the east and west of the church.

04. CHURCH OF ST. JOSEPH (SAN GIUSEPPE) - The church of San Giuseppe in Taormina was built-in in the Baroque style between the late 1600s and the early 1700s. This church, dedicated to St. Joseph, is located next to the Clock Tower and faces out onto Piazza IX Aprile. A double staircase, with a balustrade of Syracuse stone, leads up to the entrance.

The gable façade in the baroque style has a large central portal that leads into the church, and two small side portals, of which the right places in the sacristy and the left one leads to a recreation room that is often used for exhibitions of painting.

The monumental main portal is made with marbles of Taormina from different varieties, jambs and architrave in white, grey and pink in the other decorative pieces.

05. Porta Messina - The gate provides access to the heart of Taormina, the most beautiful part of history and visited the city. The famous Corso Umberto of Taormina, the road that crosses the entire historical centre of the city and frequented by many tourists every day, is closed at the ends by two gates, Porta Catania and Porta Messina. In the middle of the street, we find the door called the Clock Tower. The gates were built in the city’s fortification walls and provide access to the heart of Taormina, the most beautiful part of history and visited the city. The door to door on the north side is Porta Messina. Set within a stretch of wall that connects with the centre of Taormina fortress, Castel Tauro, Porta Messina is newer than the other and until the unification of Italy in 1860, was called Porta Ferdinandea, and dates back to the Bourbon period in the nineteenth century, in the period in which reigned Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies.
