Saint Bernard of Carinola (12 March): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On March 12, the Church commemorates St Bernard of Carinola and St Bernard of Capua, whose lives were recorded in The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler.

St Bernard served as chaplain and trusted advisor to Duke Richard II, son of Prince Jordan of Capua. His wisdom and holiness were so respected that it was said the Duke would make no decision without consulting his confessor.

When the See of Forum Claudi became vacant, Pope Victor III appointed Bernard as bishop. Recognizing the vulnerability of the location along the royal road between Rome and Naples, he prudently transferred the episcopal seat to Carinola, near Mount Massico.

There rested the relics of the hermit St Martin, mentioned in the Dialogues of St Gregory the Great. When the Duke of Benevento attempted to remove these sacred relics, God intervened with a sudden earthquake, a sign interpreted by all present that the saint's remains were not meant to leave that place.

After the Duke departed, St Bernard reverently gathered the relics and placed them upon the altar of the new church, preserving their sacred presence for the faithful.
