Saints Fortunatus, Felix, and Achilleus of Vienne (23 April): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On April 23, the Church honors St. Felix, St. Fortunatus, and St. Achilleus of Vienne, early Christian martyrs sent by St. Irenaeus of Lyon to evangelize pagan Gaul.

Though little is historically certain, tradition tells us these holy men boldly preached the Gospel in the region of Valence (later Dauphiné), converting many from paganism. Their zeal for Christ led them to destroy idols dedicated to false gods like Mercury, Saturn, and Jupiter—an act that sealed their fate.

Arrested, tortured, and ultimately beheaded around the year 212 under Roman persecution, these martyrs remind us of the cost of discipleship and the courage required to stand against a pagan world.

Their story—preserved in tradition—challenges us:
