Richard Oakes And The Occupation Of Alcatraz: Hidden Figuras

On Thanksgiving Day 1969, hundreds of people gathered in the San Francisco Bay’s Alcatraz Island to show support for the occupation held there by the group, Indians of All Tribes. The island, known for its brutal former prison, symbolized freedom for Native Americans, and by occupying it they aimed to draw attention to the mistreatment of their communities.

The event laid the groundwork for the #RedPowerMovement and is celebrated each year on Thanksgiving—also called Unthanksgiving or Thankstaking—with the Sunrise Ceremony. Mirroring the length of the 1969 occupation, the National Park Service will host an exhibition on the event for the next 19 months in honor of the occupation’s 50th anniversary.
