Jimetta Rose wants to be more than a singer, she wants to represent her community through her art. The poet and musician uses words and music to represent "black excellence," and to express all aspects of what it is to be a person of color in America. Rose grew up singing gospel at church, but eventually fell in love with jazz and soul in her late teens. With artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday on heavy rotation at her house, she was inspired to avoid being boxed into just one genre or one type of artist. Today, Rose sings about her experience as an African-American woman and mixes different genres to produce a signature style that has led her to sing all over the world.
