Investigating cardboard box babies at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union is unhappy with the slow pace of the investigation into newborn babies being put in cardboard boxes, instead of cribs at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital last year (2023).

Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, launched the probe in May, after pictures circulated on social media.

Many accused the health department for failing to provide enough baby cribs.

The provincial department says while prima facie evidence suggests that five employees were responsible for the incident, disciplinary action has been initiated against only four of the five.
