Song of the Moonblade

Moonblade used to sound generic to me. I’d skip it when there are names like Nine Lives Stealer, needing swords forged of moon rocks. But when a player pitched a 4th-generation Moonblade wielder, I thought: this is an item with soul. An elven generational blade that evolves with its wielders. I realized you could build a whole campaign around players inheriting the same blade across bloodlines.

I’m waiting for that moment when an elven character finally claims their ancestral Moonblade — after the previous wielder vanished under mysterious fate.

So I set out to recreate hopeful melodies, a playful moondance, and tell the story of three generations wielding the Moonblade in song.

Anecdote:
One of the most famous wielders is Arilyn Moonblade, from Elaine Cunningham’s Songs & Swords / Harpers novels. Her heritage and the mysteries around her sword inspired me deeply when concepting this piece.
