Fabric painting mountains for our first landscape quilt is featured in this new fiber art video... FIBER ART IS A PROCESS that uses free-motion quilting a lot and overlaps with quilting, but is fundamentally dissimilar from quilting because it isn't primarily premeditated. We will be working through the project in the coming weeks and months. There really is no formula for making fiber art, but here is the painting technique I have been exploring to get mountains to use as the heart of similar wall pieces. 1:05 We can create our own mountains if good fabric is not available.
1:99 Re-creating your own work is difficult if you have no control over the availability of materials.
2:24 My mountain fabric is 30 x 12 inches, approx.
Here are some tips from what I have learned:
2:54 Freezer paper makes a decent work surface.
3:12 Sparkles on commerical fabric often show through the paint.
3:27 Paints that don't stiffen fabric are good - and they should be heat set properly.
3:47 Experimentation is key -- try to use what you have. I pencil guidelines but don't follow them rigidly.
4:00 Dry brush for opaque, rich color.
4:12 Work wet to blend, blur and soften -- like watercolors.
4:28 Generally speaking, don't mix paints until they are completely uniform.
4:39 Foam brushes from the hardware store work well.
4:54 Don't worry...work quickly...just get something to quilt...we'll be building up the design from beneath and around this. Nothing is carved in stone here. We'll add quilting and maybe some beading. We'll have foreground elements.
5:47 Complete (or partial) drying between paint layers helps you control the crispness of your lines.
6:03 Take a break if you feel you are overworking your design.
6:18 Silver gray highlights are good.
6:28 As we go, we'll emphasize the parts we already like...
6:45 Enjoy the process.
6:56 Dry completely and heat set as directed for your type of paint.

MATERIALS to consider:
Freezer paper
Pencil
Acrylic fabric or craft paints - heat settable
30 x 12" piece of fabric, or other
Various old brushes, including foam brushes
Cup or old margarine tub for water
Something to use as a paint palette
